Diesel fuel is obtained through the partial distillation
of crude oil. It contains mineral compounds and sulfur and is composed
primarily of paraffin and napthenic compounds. Diesel is ignited
in an internal combustion engine cylinder by the heat of air under
high compression. It’s primarily used in heavy-duty vehicles
– on-road and off-road trucks, tractors, construction equipment,
locomotives and marine engines.
Diesel fuel is very similar to heating oil. In the United States
there are taxes on clear diesel fuel that is used on the highway.
Off-road applications, primarily agricultural or construction, can
use red-dyed fuel that doesn’t include the road tax. This
untaxed diesel is dyed red for identification purposes. A person
can be fined if they’re using this untaxed diesel fuel for
an “on-road” taxable purpose.
BioDiesel can be made from soybean, canola, animal fats, waste vegetable
oil or microalgae oils through a process where they are combined
with alcohol in the presence of a catalyst to form ethyl or methyl
ester. It can be mixed with petroleum diesel and stored anywhere
petroleum is. Although it can be blended at any percentage, 2% is
the most common for any application. We have 100% soy available
which can be blended at whatever percentage a customer may request
– for a clear or dyed application.
Severson Oil provides clear fuel - both regular and bio - to stations,
trucking companies, bus companies, and government entities. We provide
dyed fuel - including premium and Premier - to farmers, construction
companies, manufacturing, and government entities.
